Hybrid Smart Watch retains the physical hands of a traditional watch on a central perforated Amoled display, capable of automatic time-adjusting and avoidance of reading areas. The built-in battery drives the physical hands and the screen, and its pre-stored power can run the gearbox for 100 days even if the screen's power is off. Floating touch technology allows users to wake up and interact with the screen by touching and swiping on the glass surface. With the built-in software, the physical hands can automatically adjust the time.

Production Technology

The front and back of the watch are made of eco-friendly ceramic,and skin-friendly 316L stainless steel forms its body in a cold rolling process with strong corrosion resistance.The dial features an original perforated electronic screen with a special “coating”on the sapphire glass,which effectively prevents stains and fingerprints.The strap is made of fine woven nylon Velcro for a comfortable and convenient wearing, a easy cleaning,and a perfect match with different wrist sizes.

Design Challenge

The hardest task was to make a smart electronic screen with physical hands on it.We used central perforated technology to have the gearbox shaft pierce the screen,i.e. the hands walk on the screen. Features such as automatic time-adjusting, avoidance and longer battery life were also considered. The structure, consisting of an amoled electronic screen, physical hands and a glass cover, is especially equipped with floating touching technology, allowing enough space for the physical hands to run.

Project Duration

In 2019,this project kicked off in March in Guangzhou and ended in September in the same city,and was exhibited and launched onto the market at Global Sources Consumer Electronics in October.

Operation Flow

Floating touch technology allows users to wake up and interact with the screen by touching and swiping on the glass surface.With the built-in software, the physical hands can automatically adjust the time.When alerts come,the hands will avoid causing reading discomfort.Through scanning the built-in QR code,users can connect the watch to the smart health app on their mobile phones to monitor their health for all-day protection.

Research

The Internet has plunged most people into sub-health,and the traditional watch industry needs to be upgraded.Hence we rethink what a watch can meet,,defining it as an identity and health companion instead of an ornament.This watch makes life smarter and healthier as simplified time-adjusting,longer standby,better health and quick access to medical care are relevant to people’s life,health and healthcare future.Changes in a watch itself make for the inheritance and growth of the industry.

Inspiration

Since the traditional mechanical watch lacks enough functions and the smartwatch is easy to run out of power,we are prompted to re-devise a more practical watch.With these two types of watch integrated,this Hybrid Smart Watch renders the traditional mechanical watch connected-it has added practical functions such as internet health management based on the traditional watchmaking techniques and the accurate timekeeping mechanical device to achieve multi-scenario application.

Project Overview

Hybrid Smart Watch has been a Bronze winner in the Wearable Technologies Design award category in the year 2020 organized by the prestigious A' Design Award & Competition. The Bronze A' Design Award is given to outstanding designs that showcase a high degree of creativity and practicality. It recognizes the dedication and skill of designers who produce work that stands out for its thoughtful development and innovative use of materials and technology. These designs are acknowledged for their professional execution and potential to influence industry standards positively. Winning this award highlights the designer's ability to blend form and function effectively, offering solutions that enhance people's lives and wellbeing.
