A big floating roof unifies the formal and informal spaces in a simple way, like a giant open umbrella. In order to achieve the floating and light feeling, the big steel roof not only needs to overcome the large cantilevers and spans, but also needs to keep member as slender as possible. With several structural innovations, a hybrid structure mimics umbrella cantilevers are formed.

In order to realise the sense of floating of the big black roof, the building is structurally innovative. The roof, as an overall stress system, not only has to overcome the difficulties of large overhangs and spans, but also has to make each rod as slim as possible to maximise the sense of lightness and composition of the rod structure.
The project started in 2021 in China and finished in 2023 in China, and the project address is Xiangtang Village, Pukou District, Nanjing City, Jiangsu Province
This is a public event centre building, capable of meeting the daily needs of meetings, exhibitions, receptions and other meeting, exhibition, reception and other daily needs.
Based on the Grasshopper plugin extension tool on the Rhino platform, Karamba3D force analysis and form finding technology were used to explore the tools and paths suitable for architects to carry out structural form design in the scheme stage, and successfully completed the structural form design of asymmetric complex roof shapes.
In traditional Chinese housing, the main hall called ‘Ting Tang’ is the most important family space for public activities. It usually has a formal architectural gesture, with tall, dark and semi open space. Inspired by this, the village center is considered as the ‘main hall’ for the whole village. Besides a multifunction hall for formal public activities, the building also provides lots of open spaces to encourage social interaction between villagers and tourists.
Village Hall Public Multifunctional Building has been a Silver winner in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design award category in the year 2024 organized by the prestigious A' Design Award & Competition. The Silver A' Design Award celebrates top-tier designs that embody excellence and innovation. This award acknowledges creations that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also highly functional, reflecting the designer's deep understanding and skill. Silver A' Design Award recipients are recognized for their contribution to raising industry standards and advancing the practice of design.
