Perched along Ueberlingen's Seepromenade, the 17th century building at No. 11 has long been a waterfront fixture. Owned by the Oexle family since 1920, it became a restaurant in 1957. A recent renovation balanced preservation with sustainability, incorporating upcycled structural elements and repurposed furnishings. The redesign draws from its setting muted blues and natural materials echo the lake's shifting tones, while expanded window openings maximize natural light and frame uninterrupted water views, reinforcing the seamless connection between architecture and landscape.

Unique Properties

Production Technology

Upcycling played an important role here existing support structures were carefully restored and historic furniture was given a new purpose. Old wooden beams and insignia were harmoniously integrated to preserve the authentic charm of the building and build a bridge between past and present.

Design Challenge

The goal was to breathe new life into the building without losing the memories of the past. Upcycling played an important role: existing structural elements were carefully restored, and historic furniture was given a new purpose. Old wooden beams and insignia were harmoniously integrated to preserve the building's authentic charm, creating a bridge between the past and the present. The project was realized according to the phase sustainability of the German Sustainable Building Council. (In German Phase Nachhaltigkeit der Deutschen Gesellschaft fuer Nachhaltiges Bauen).

Project Duration

The project started in 2022 in Ueberlingen Germany and was completed in 2024.

Operation Flow

The building was to be given a new lease of life without losing the memories of times gone by.

Research

Old town area in Ueberlingen requires careful handling. Parts of the building belonged to the old city wall.

Inspiration

The lakefront location was central to the design, with the lake flowing into the interior. This was achieved through a thoughtful choice of materials and colors, especially in the bar area, where shades of blue reflect the water’s hues. Floor to ceiling windows offer captivating views, strengthening the connection with the lake. In the seminar area and vacation apartments above, the sensation of floating above the water enhances the visual and emotional bond with the serene surroundings.
