Restaurant for Roito Inc.
The polycarbonate partitions that make up the dining area reflect the view of the ocean in front of the site, while at the same time refracting the light. Pendants and bracket lights are placed on top of the partitions to reflect the light. The partitions reflect the incoming sunlight and change their expression over time. The designer aimed to create an immersive space that sublimates the elements of Shirahama by light, while incorporating a view seamlessly connected to the outside.

Polycarbonate has a ribbed material that connects the front and back surfaces and refracts and reflects light. We noticed that this characteristic resembles the look of the ocean when the sun reflects off it. Polycarbonate also has a slightly glossy surface, which reflects the scenery facing it. This allowed us to create a design that lightly reflects the outside scenery and seamlessly connects with the environment.
Verification of light reflection and refraction by polycarbonate and lighting. Since the expression of light changes with layout and distance, studies were repeated to harmonize the best positioning and functional layout.
The project started in August 2021 and finished in September 2023 in Shirahama
Our approach to this project emphasizes sustainability and architectural integrity. By reusing the existing building and incorporating materials that enhance natural light, the design maximizes aesthetic appeal while minimizing environmental impact. The design also takes into consideration the harmonious landscape and familiarity of the area by taking advantage of its unique characteristics.
I think the beauty and comfort in nature is a common understanding that everyone feels, regardless of generation or race. In this age of diversity, taking design cues from nature is a way to create connections between people. This is the most important aspect of interior design, and I hope to create a connection between design and the environment through human connection.
Shirarahama Beach in front of the property is one of the most beautiful beaches in the Kansai region, from which Nanki-Shirahama takes its name, and the development of the town has spread along with the sea. People gather there and feel a strong connection between the city and the sea. I felt that many memories of this town exist along with the sea. By incorporating this view of the sea into the interior of “303,” we wanted to create a design that would connect with this place.
