Residence for YUN CAI Interior Design
Luminous Serenity is envisioned as a sanctuary for the client's daughter embarking on her medical studies in Kaohsiung. Rooted in the philosophy of wabi-sabi, the residence distills urban living into a meditative retreat, stripping away excess, embracing natural materials, and crafting an atmosphere of calm and resilience. Driftwood, tree bark veneer, and eco conscious finishes articulate both sustainability and emotional grounding, while abundant daylight filters through timber louvers to create shifting rhythms of light and shadow, turning the act of returning home into a ritual of release.

The design unfolds around three themes, Light and Shadow, Calm, and Return. Daylight flows through timber louvers like a living rhythm, while tactile materials such as stone, wood, and plaster form a grounded palette. The space becomes a vessel of healing, where light, texture, and emotion converge into a restorative narrative.

Eco friendly specialty plasters, driftwood, and tree bark veneer are combined with PANDOMO seamless flooring, minimizing waste through direct application on the existing base. This mix of natural and sustainable finishes balances rawness with refinement, showcasing craftsmanship while supporting durability and environmental responsibility.
The challenge lay in creating a sanctuary within a standard apartment while minimizing demolition. By layering textures, integrating sustainable materials, and orchestrating light as a dynamic element, the design transcends visual style, becoming a restorative environment that endures both emotionally and environmentally.
The project, located in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, was completed in November 2024 after an 8 month duration.
Spatial fluidity fosters interaction: the kitchen island anchors gatherings, while open sightlines link the public zones. Timber louvers let light shift throughout the day, enriching spatial expressions. Each space, study, bedrooms, living areas, balances functionality with mood, encouraging wellbeing and meaningful daily rituals.
The project investigates how wabi sabi aesthetics can be adapted to contemporary urban living. Through material reuse, low carbon processes, and nuanced light control, it explores a holistic balance between sustainability and emotional wellbeing, proposing a design model where aesthetics, ecology, and human needs align.
Inspired by the philosophy of wabi sabi, the residence transforms urban living into a meditative retreat. Stripping away excess and embracing natural elements, it was created as a sanctuary for the client’s daughter embarking on her medical studies, offering a place of calm, reflection, and emotional grounding.
