Production Technology

Inspired by the ancient Japanese art of ikebana, this innovative floor lamp represents a unique fusion of traditional floral arrangement and contemporary design. Its distinctive feature is a dual-lighting system: an upper light accentuates floral compositions, while a lower light creates a cozy atmosphere for reading. The lamp’s innovative design, which combines functionality with artistic expression, fills a gap in the market by offering a sophisticated platform for displaying floral arrangements in modern interiors.

Design Challenge

The designer came up with the idea for the floor lamp-vase while thinking about moving to a new apartment with not much space. Since they really like having fresh flowers at home, they wanted to find a way to combine a lamp and a vase into one thing. It was a practical solution to save space while still being able to enjoy beautiful floral arrangements. The result is a useful and convenient piece of furniture that does two jobs at once.

Project Duration

The project started in January 2025 in Moscow and finished in September 2025 in Moscow, and was exhibited in Interlight in October 2025.

Operation Flow

The Ikebana floor lamp serves a dual purpose as both a lighting fixture and a versatile vase. The removable glass vase is designed to accommodate fresh flowers, featuring a frosted base to conceal any standing water. The vase is easily detachable for cleaning and maintenance. A solid marble base ensures stability and balance. The lamp offers dimmable functionality controlled by a convenient switch located at the bottom. It features a dual lighting system: an upper ring illuminates the floral arrangement, while the lower light provides functional illumination for work surfaces. This multifunctional design is ideal for reading, working, or enhancing the decorative appeal of any space.

Research

The primary research objective was to develop a design that seamlessly combines the functions of a floor lamp and a vase. The key challenge was to create a stable yet easily removable vase design while ensuring proper illumination for both floral arrangements and the workspace below. To achieve this goal, dozens of sketches and structural designs were developed. Extensive market research of vases and flowers was conducted to determine the optimal size parameters. Multiple stability tests were performed, leading to adjustments of the original base specifications to ensure both functionality and safety.

Inspiration

Drawing inspiration from the ancient Japanese art of ikebana — meaning life of flowers — the design embodies the essence of this refined art form. By blending traditional floral arrangement principles with modern interior aesthetics, the creator has successfully transformed the concept of a conventional lamp into a versatile platform for showcasing nature’s beauty. This fusion of Eastern philosophy and contemporary design creates a harmonious balance between art and functionality.
