Unique Properties

The exhibition presents 76 artifacts from the Longmen Grottoes, including sculptures, reliefs, and calligraphic rubbings. Through spatial design, scenography, and lighting, the project adapts the museum gallery to improve how visitors view and understand the works. By combining historical artifacts with installation design, the exhibition supports cultural interpretation and public awareness of heritage. Within 45 days of opening, the exhibition recorded over 450000 visitors.

Production Technology

The exhibition integrates spatial design, installation structures, textile banners, reflective flooring, and programmable lighting systems. Fabric structures are used to suspend large scale imagery, while mirror-finished flooring enhances spatial reflection. Installations derived from calligraphic brushstrokes translate traditional visual elements into contemporary spatial forms.

Design Challenge

The main challenge was presenting ancient sculptures shaped by long-term historical processes in a contemporary exhibition format while maintaining their cultural context. The design introduced large suspended banners, reflective flooring, and a central lotus structure to organize the space. In the calligraphy section, brushstroke forms were transformed into installations, creating a relationship between traditional artifacts and spatial design.

Project Duration

The project design began in February 2025 in Shanghai, China, and the exhibition opened in July 2025 at Lingshan Scenic Area, Wuxi, China.

Operation Flow

Visitors move through a spatial narrative that transitions from historical interpretation to immersive experience. Sculptures and calligraphic artifacts are arranged around large-scale installations that guide circulation and visual focus. Suspended Buddha banners, reflective flooring, and dynamic lighting create layered perspectives as visitors move through the space. A central lotus seat invites visitors to pause, interact, and photograph, transforming the exhibition into both a contemplative and participatory cultural experience.

Research

The project is based on research into the sculptural forms of the Longmen Grottoes and the spatial characteristics of the museum gallery. The study analyzed proportions, carving styles, and calligraphic inscriptions to identify visual elements adaptable to exhibition design. These findings informed artifact placement, installation structures, and lighting strategies, enabling the exhibition to balance historical authenticity with immersive contemporary presentation.

Inspiration

The exhibition draws inspiration from the artistic language of the Longmen Grottoes, including Buddhist sculpture, stone reliefs, decorative patterns, and calligraphy from the Northern Wei period. Through research into these elements, the design reinterprets traditional aesthetics using a contemporary spatial and visual approach.
