Floor Lamp for Maytoni GmbH
The lamp was developed under the influence of the research about the concept of proprioception. This special, muscular sense, thanks to which a person feels his own body in space, is informally called the Sixth Sense. Thanks to this design approach, it has been developed a floor lamp that a person can use with their eyes closed, without being distracted from their work or leisure. With the help of a base, the lamp can be placed as close as possible to the workplace or even between and furniture. And also with the help of switches located at the arm's length.

Wishing to create a lamp with a simplified control system, for people with different proprioception level we started with the base of the lamp - it is made in the form of a cross, precisely the shape that allows you to place the lamp in the most convenient place of the room. Later, we decided to get rid of unnecessary details that may interfere with use. To facilitate the control system, we placed the switches above the shades, so that they are located at the arms length when he is sitting.

Developing the production technology, we introduced some changes that were not foreseen at the initial stage. Firstly, we made the floor lamp collapsible in order to guarantee the integrity of its delivery and save materials for packaging, and for the rational use of natural resources. We also initially wanted to make it in glossy black color. But after the production of the prototype, we decided to change it to matte black with shagreen. To make it more pleasant to the touch and more practical to use.
Lamp was developed as part of the study of proprioception. This imposed many restrictions on its design. It was necessary to make a design into account all the technical features. We also wanted to create such an appearance of the lamp, so that it would remain relevant for many years. This was due to the fact that this object was used again, changing the function of the room. It was done for the rational use of the resources that were involved in its manufacture.
The project started in April 2021 in Moscow and finished in January 2022 in Moscow. and was exhibited in MosBuild 2022 in March 2022.
Person can place it next to the desktop. And turn it on with your hand without taking your elbow off the work surface. Because we have calculated the height of the switches and placed them at the top of the fixtures. In addition, thanks to this, a person can turn on one or two shades without looking at them and without being distracted from a computer. With the help of a special base, it can be placed as close as possible to the work surface. Also, it can be placed between the furniture.
The main interest in this design research was in the study of the proprioception. This has immediately changed the approach to the design. We usually think that, for example, turning a device on and off requires an eye contact. And in this case, we refuse it in favor of tactile control. To do this, the object itself must be as close as possible. Also leads to the fact that the control should be as close to the hand as possible, when a person is sitting or standing.
We turned to the concept of the sixth sense - because the ideas of only five sensory organ systems are not scientifically confirmed. Such feeling like proprioception helps us to dispose ourselves in space. Alexander Chelzer with colleagues from the NIH revealed the function of the PIEZO2 gene. It is related with tactile sensations. People whose PIEZO2 functions poorly cannot perform simple actions with their closed eyes. Therefore, we decided to develop a lamp with a simplified control system.
